Italian wine by region

The varied wines of Italy follow a geographical pattern which divides the country into four sections: Northeast, Northcentral and Northwest, Central , South and the Islands

 CENTRAL ITALY

This area which is blessed by plenty of sunshine and good temperatures seem to be the Country's best natural conditions for good wine.

 THE NORTHEAST

There are three northeastern regions, known collectively as the Tre Venezie or simply the Venezie, this region is the role model for the crafting of wine as we known it today.  Together more classified wine is produced than in any other section of the country, which is remarkable when you consider that this accounts for less than a sixth of the nation's total production.

The technology of winemaking in general is more sophisticated and more organized here than elsewhere in the world because of the demand from neighbours such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland – not forgetting more further markets such as the USA and UK. Two of Italy's top wine schools are here (at San Michele all'Adige in Trentino and Conegliano in the Veneto) and not forgetting the worlds largest vine nursery which is situated at Rauscedo in Fruily.

The determing quality factor for these regions is the climate which is influenced by the Alps,

The most popular wines in Verona are, Soave, Valpolicella and Bardoolina, however in the central and eastern Veneto and Fruili, imported varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and the pinots not forgetting Chardonnay and Sauvignon are in great competition against the Tocai, Prosecco, Verduzzo, Refosco and Raboso.

Since so many varieties of wine are produced in all regions it was easier to group the wines under a single name for a geogrphaical area, such as the Veneto's Piave, Friuli's Collio Goriziano.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

There are five regions of north-central and northwest Italy and this covers most of the Alps and Apennines.  The types of wines made here like the place, soil and climate vary but keep their own identities.

The "industrial triangle" between Milan, Turn and The mediterranean port of Geneo is the most affluent part of Italy.  Since property is valued high and there are a lot of mountains, Vineyards are hidden and wine is a commodity that is financially and spiritually rewarding, however some of Italy's best wines can be found here whether the label says Barolo or Lambrusco.

Together these five regions produce about 20% of Italy's total wine.

THE SOUTH & ISLANDS

These six regions in the South of have plenty of hills with the best conditions which are considered ideal for modern viticulture.
